I am trying to understand which code applys to medical equipment power cords.
My example is a 16 amp load from a portable medical device that has a connected 14-3 Sj cord connected to a 20 amp cord cap. There is a differance of 1 amp between the two codes tables IEC vs NEC. I also see some equipment is listed with a CSA and UL recognized.
Any experiance with these codes?
Thank You
Joe

A couple of different things come into play here.

1. If your local AHJ has not adopted the IEC then you should close the book now. It will not matter what it says.

2. If the equipment as a whole is listed and that cord is part of that listing then the manufacturer is certifying and the listing supports that all of the components of the complete system meet the standars of the listing.

3. If the equipment ONLY has a UL Recognized label then it is merely a recognized component and is not listed as a stand alone piece of equipment.
