For installations in the USA, can devices with IEC only ratings be used? Specifically, I have a IEC hazardous area rated pressure switch that I would like to use in a Class 1 Div2 area.

you could under a very few conditions.

if it is dual rated for CID2.

if it is in an IS circuit.

if it was purged/pressurized.

otherwise, probably not.

As asked, no. While some NEC Zone rated equipment can be used in Class I, Division 2, it still must meet US standards. See Section 501.5 and its cross references.

OP stated IEC rated only. Even IS, nonincendive or purged/pressurized wouldn't fly - unless the AHJ could be convinced under Section 500.8(A). Oddly enough, if I were the AHJ you might convince me; but I wouldn't count on it otherwise.t

I am curious just how you come to this conclusion.

  • IS and nonincendive still require, "...wiring methods permitted for unclassified locations." [Sections 501.10(B)(3) and 504.20]
  • Purged/pressurized would still require recognized equipment; i.e., approved. [Section 110.2]
  • In both cases above, no AHJ will accept IEC only rated equipment unless they are very familiar with "Ex" ratings (like me:p)

why would an IEC device not allow for a recognized wiring method?

purged/pressurized equipment effectively creates an unclassified volume where devices not otherwise suitable can be used. if you are claiming you can't use this pressure switch in a purged/pressurized environment, you are effectively saying it can't be used anywhere, and I don't see how that can be. There is no requirement in the code that pressure switches be listed.

as for IS circuits, IIRC, there is a specific statement that simple devices (like switches) are not required to be listed.

As I said, with the right AHJ, it may fly under 500.8(A). However, I don't see too many AHJs that would accept only IEC rated (and marked) equipment. I just don't believe AHJs will accept IEC only marked equipment. To most US eyes IEC equipment appears "cheap".

BTW I never once said listed, although you may want to review 501.105 (B). Some of the exceptions might be acceptable where the AHJ understands IEC markings.

I also understand purged/pressurized; I may not favor it, but I do understand it.

i am having a hard time understanding your thinking on purged/pressurized equipment. Since the protected volume is not in a classified area, why would anything in 501 matter at all? Whatever is there is just regular equipment. I have never heard of any inspector turning down IEC rated equipment just because it is IEC and not to US standards (short of some listing requirement).

It may be the difference in perspective between a manufactured product that was intended to be purged/pressurized and field installing something as a last resort. Factory installed equipment might also fly under Section 90.7
