Iecc 2015 occupancy sensor uses

I have question IECC 2015 says not to use auto shut off where endanger to occupants or in security areas. Also IECC 2015 specifically list space types in which occupancy sensor shall be installed like restroom. So I have a restaurant commericial is it okay to use occupancy sensor in Kitchen, customer dining areas, mechanical room, food prep areas?

Probably not a good idea for the mechanical room. If it contains electrical equipment that may need maintenance access, particularly while hot, the NEC does not allow an automatic timer or occupancy sensor unless it also has an override switch.

I don't think that the NEC cares about those. However for a public occupancy you may be required to provide egress lighting which will come on when needed even though the occupancy sensor may have timed out.
Restrooms with stalls that create blind spots for the sensor are another problem area. But nobody seems to feel that that is a code issue.

When I said code is was thinking entirely of the NEC, not other internationally based codes that may have been adopted in a US jurisdiction. I have not read IECC 2015.

You are permitted to place Occupancy Sensors there, but you are not required; in 2015 IECC, it notes that if you do not provide occupancy sensors in those areas that are listed (C405.2.1), then you are required to place them on time switch control. With this, you have to use a manual control that provides light reduction in accordance with C405.2.2.2, and automatic controls are not then required for the following: (....3. Spaces where an automatic shutoff would endanger occupant safety or security).

Basically, you need to have the lighting via a relay panel, with local manual override and light reduction controls if you do not place occupancy sensors in there.

IECC defers to other codes where safety comes into play. I think their wording was something to the effect that any safety codes take priority over the IECC.

That said, IMO its a design issue for rooms that don't have a electrical equipment. Codes don't always specify exactly how everything needs to be. As a designer, sometimes you have to design and decide for yourself what is required.

I don't usually put sensors in commercial kitchens. But it kind of depends on the kitchen also. If its just a toaster and a microwave, then yes a sensor. Fryers and commercial stoves with fire protection, probably not.

And if some AHJ comes along and insists they have to be there, then its a change order.
