I am looking to take a exam for a electrician license in Illinois. I know there are no state licenses so which city do you guys recommend I take the test for? I took a NEC class and had some previous job experience.

I think I read a previous post where someone said that Illinois municipalities of less than 500,000 people have to recognize other municipalities' licenses. It sounds like you can get one license in one municipality and can then use it anywhere in the state except Chicago.

If this is the case, I think your best bet is Rockford, where they issue electrician licenses to anyone who pays a fee.

If you have a license that was obtained without a test, other cities that have tests can make you take their test before they let you do work in their city.
