Hello,

I'm interested in obtaining a license to practice in Illinois.

Anyone have any info that may help me, where to take exam, costs? Training materials I will buy from this site. I tried looking at my states business page, unable to find anything on Electrician licensing.

thanks!

Re: Illinois Electrician cert/license

You can't do that in Illinois. There is no state code or license.

Some local governments have licenses but most are just a registration that you pay for.

Ok I just called a school they said "NEC" to do work in the suburbs.

For City work I would need to pass the City of Chicago Supervising Electrician Licensing exam

Many of the suburbs have amended the NEC to prohibit NM and most other cables. In many of these areas houses are required to be in conduit Make sure you know the local rules before doing any work.

Hope this is not too late!!
I have a licenses which reads " in consideration of $100 we issue this license to""****.
City of Ottawa, Ill, tests regularly, 8 hours to fill out an open book test. If you know the subject and can find the answers, they will give you a license, which can be used in any Ill jurisdiction. Some areas require local registering, but I can work in any city and am a registered offender/contractor in Cook County.
Somewhere in the lower reaches of the license it states that I have passed a test, but the license does open with the money bit. ;)

OH, yeah, any time you get a permit in any local jurisdiction, ask for a copy of the ""LOCAL EXCEPTIONS''. I have had to remove PVC installed above ground, but was able to "legally" replace it with EMT thinwall outside. And when I ran NMB in a UL listed chase, I was informed that I would pass code if I pulled it out, stripped off the plastic covering, and put the individual wires back in. However, I replaced the UL listed cable with UL LABELED  thhn.

Re: Illinois Electrician cert/license

problemsolver600,
That test is about to be retired. It is out of date. I wrote the original and the next one will be much tougher based on feedback that I have recieved from inspectors in other parts of Illinois. One of the problems with the Illinois rules is that if a city requires a test, they must accept the results of any other Illinois city's test.

Re: Illinois Electrician cert/license

Thanks for the input! The main problem for a lot of experienced electricians is establishing credentials. Any foot in the door is a big help to keeping the roof over the head. I am known in my home town area as a good electrician, considered "code qualified" by local inspectors, but did not have credibility outside of this area.
The Ottawa opportunity qualified me for a better job.
