Hi. If you take your exam in Downer's Grove,Illinois, do you know if it is accepted in all other surrounding towns? Would it be accepted in Cook county as well as DuPage or Will county? Or is there a limited area that it is accepted? Can you get your license in Downer's Grove and then go pull a permit or do a job in say...Burr Ridge, LaGrange, Burbank, Oak Forest, Tinley Park, Orland Park, etc. Are there other testing sites in this area? Do you know how many questions are on the exam and the approximate cost of the test? Is there a site I could go to that could tell me? I have an out of state friend who is moving here in April and would like to take the electrician's exam mainly for residential, not commercial...do they seperate the 2 or is it all one test? Do I ask too many questions? Probably...sorry, but I don't have a clue about this stuff. Thanks, Nancy

Back when I took my exam I chose Chicago because it was the only one I knew offered testing, and so far I have not found anyplace that didn't accept it including (back then) Downer's Grove... (although I've heard they no longer do... probably because Chicago doesn't accept other licenses)
I'm pretty sure Chicago doesn't accept any license except their own, which is probably because they have their own Electrical Code. Almost all other towns accept a license from any other "testing" city but most will require you to buy a business and/ or contractors license and post a bond and proof of insurance to work in their jurisdiction. Some do not even require an electrician's license or test. With my Chicago license I have recently pulled permits in Burr Ridge, Desplaines, Mount Prospect, Barrington, Carpentersville, Palatine, Algonquin, Crystal Lake, McHenry, Elgin, East and West Dundee, StCharles, and others.

Downer's Grove requirements are here: http://downers.us/citycode/code/ch8/chapter8.IX.htm#8_AIX

Unfortunately they don't have an online registration for testing so someone will need to go in and register your friend for the test, which will require a copy of driver's license etc and the $75 test fee. They are already booked until January so it would be a good idea to sign up at least 3 months in advance. Info: 630-434-5515

Chicago License is handled by Chicago Dept of Buildings:

They have application form and practice questions there also.

The Chicago Code is printed by Index Publishing: http://www.indexpub.com/

Good Luck

I think Don once posted that in Illinois, cities and towns are required to offer reciprocity for electrical licenses as long as the original license was obtained by taking a test. I think he also said that those rules only apply for cities with a population under 500,000, which would allow Chicago to do its own thing.

Glad we have state licensing here. It would get expensive to have to buy licenses in every jurisdiction I work in.
