Is there a NEC requirement for illumination of outdoor gear < 600v ?

110.26(D) doesn't seem to differentiate between indoor and outdoor.

110.26(D) Illumination. Illumination shall be provided for all
working spaces about service equipment, switchboards,
switchgear, panelboards, or motor control centers installed in-
doors and shall not be controlled by automatic means only.
Additional lighting outlets shall not be required where the
work space is illuminated by an adjacent light source or as
permitted by 210.70(A)(1), Exception No. 1, for switched re-
ceptacles.

Ah, you are one of those “details” people. :D

First thought for me is possibly a building code requirement. Maybe minimum exterior illumination required per the occupancy, not the equipment per se.

No my error. I read it quickly and thought that the indoors was only for MCC's. :ashamed1:

We need an English major. You may be right. I can read it either way.
I think the word OR may well be saying all the others (anywhere) OR MCCs inside.
Make little sense that way but I can certainly read it that way. Help!, English majors! :D

MH, Mullins, and others say indoor equipment only. Mostly electrical rooms are examples.

I agree with this.

If one loses lights in a room with no windows, one is in the complete dark unexpectedly and has to navigate out through hazards.

Outside to start is different.

You guys are harsh....

Far from an English major...Think of it like a cct problem.
AND....in series
OR......in parallel

X and Y and Z.....three switches in series, or each condition met for and each switch closed for a TRUE condition.
X and Y and Z.....three switches in parallel, only requires ONE switch closed for a TRUE condition.
INDOORS follows the switches and is a separate condition to be met for illumination to be required.

A few slight changes.

D) Illumination. Illumination shall be provided for all indoor working spaces containing service equipment, switchboards, switchgear, panelboards, or motor control centers. The illumination shall not be controlled by automatic means only. Additional lighting outlets shall not be required where the work space is illuminated by an adjacent light source or as permitted by 210.70(A)(1), Exception No. 1, for switched re- ceptacles.

Any better?
