Image compression

Recently I tried posting some images and they were being compressed, both .jpeg and .png. The original files were 145 k or 45 k. Photos others have recently posted don't appear to have been compressed. Is there a setting I don't know about?

jpeg and png are always compressed; about the only uncompressed format you might see is tiff. Even with a jpg/png, you can down-sample the resolution and squash the color-space to make them even smaller. I can take an image that's 1200x1600 (and 405kb) and just by converting to 8-bit color cut the size in half. Removing the metadata will also shrink it. And for most purposes, 400x400 is enough resolution to see whatever's needed. There's no reason to post full-size camera original images here.

I am aware that .jpeg and .png are compressed formats.

In .jpeg my original file is 121 kbytes and 800 x 480, details are readable, and in .png the same image is 43 kbytes with the same pixel size. The .jpeg is just slightly more readable in one small area.

When imported into this forum they become 467 x 280 and 27 kbytes.
