Have a situation where there are two GFCI's on an outside wall of the house, and then there is a Screen Room built off the back of the house. Do you have to have In-use covers on these GFCI's. The only chance these things are going to see rain, is if it's blowing horizontally.

Also - do they make a Brown, Single covere (covers both outlets in a GFCI duplex) WP cover?

Thanks

Brett

Brett,
are the recpt.s OUTSIDE or INSIDE the Screenroom?

You can get brown duplex WP covers...but they are not "in-use" covers.
If someone makes a brown "in-use"...I don't know?

I think 406 is really what I'm trying to fully understand. They aree GFCI - the thing I'm trying to really grasp firmly, is what 406 is asking for in this situation.

Thanks,

Brett

From the NECH:
To ensure the weatherproof integrity of the cord-and-plug connection to a receptacle located in an outdoor wet location, 406.8(B)(1) requires receptacle covers that provide a weatherproof enclosure at all times. The requirement for this type of cover is not contingent on the anticipated use of the receptacle. This requirement applies to all 15- and 20-ampere, 125- and 250-volt receptacles that are installed in outdoor wet locations, including those receptacle outlets at dwelling units specified by 210.52(E). Exhibits 406.4 and 406.5 are examples of the type of receptacle enclosure required by 406.8(B)(1).
I can't copy/paste the images in the exhibt.....soooo...

Exhibits 406.4/5 show a duplex and a quad mounted on the side of a house, in a downpour, with cords plugged in...safely under a bubble.

The difference between Article 406.8(A) and 406.8(B) are DAMP and WET. Art. 100 deals with that:
Location, Damp.
Locations protected from weather and not subject to saturation with water or other liquids but subject to moderate degrees of moisture. Examples of such locations include partially protected locations under canopies, marquees, roofed open porches, and like locations, and interior locations subject to moderate degrees of moisture, such as some basements, some barns, and some cold-storage warehouses.

Location, Wet.
Installations under ground or in concrete slabs or masonry in direct contact with the earth; in locations subject to saturation with water or other liquids, such as vehicle washing areas; and in unprotected locations exposed to weather.

Going back to my first question:
are the recpt.s OUTSIDE or INSIDE the Screenroom?

Simple answer is decide if it's a wet or damp location and then select the cover. If wet, the in-use style cover is required. Damp it's not.

We are still waiting for Brett to decide if it's damp...

If it's a screenroom (I'm assuming this is a "screened in porch or room which doesn't have windows that can be closed against the weather"), does it matter which side of the screens these outlets are on?

There's a reason they don't put screen doors on submarines.

Bell catalogue # 5103-2, is a single gang verticle bronze gfci cover
