We have a lot of metal boxes that are in block or brick walls. Some are outside. Some are inside. They are or will be soon beyond device replacement. One thing i have done is to place a pvc fs or fd box over it ---close nipple the conductors into box....device....cover...caulk etc. This work out but was wondering if any others methods may be commonly used? Thanks-Doug

For the inside boxes, they make a 4" square box with a single-gang opening in the back that will fasten to your existing box. I would use a 6-32 tap and clean the threads and use some stainless 6-32 screws to maximize the life of that installation. Use RS covers for your devices and you have a nice, clean installation. For the outside, what you described or bell boxes with appropriate WP covers would work fine.
