I would start with NFPA79. Virtually all machine controls in the US use this standard.
Past that there are no books of any real value that I have run across. A lot of tidbits here and there though.
This is really a forum for electrical installation more than control design.
There is an email list for control systems engineers you might want to take a look at. You can sign up at www.control.com.
It is not anywhere near as good as it was a few years ago, seems to be a lot of homework type questions these days, but if there is a good book, someone will know where to find it.
The ISA has a lot of good stuff for sale. Pricey. A lot of it is oriented towards continuous process industries (refineries and such), but good stuff none the less.
