Article 500.5(A) FPN states, "Through exercise of ingenuity in the layout of electrical installations for hazardous locations, it is frequently possible to locate much of the equipment in a reduced level of classification or in an unclassified location and...."
Is the code implying that if I can't figure out a way to stay out of a classified location then I must be a dumby and incapable of ingenuity? I think this may be the only location in the code that calls to question the abilities of an electrician. Do any of you know of other odd code statements like this?

Who ever writes the FPN's should be held accountable and required to sign the notes.

Re: ingenuity?

bph interesting comment. I don't know of any other comments similar to that. Unless its a time and materials job why would you locate any thing in a hazarous location if you didn't have to?

Re: ingenuity?

I should like to give the paragraph?s author the benefit of the doubt. I think this statement is intended to recognize the intellect (and indeed the ingenuity) inherent in most of the people who ply our trade. But there are many who would see one solution that satisfies code requirements and stop reading, stop looking for alternative methods that also meet code and that might be more beneficial. I think the intent is to alert the reader of an opportunity, not to admonish the reader for a presumed inability to find the opportunity without outside help.

Re: ingenuity?

My hats off to this code writers observance of the fact that some might not know that you can locate equipment out of a classified location that can be associated with a classified location. I have seen this happen and it don't mean that the electrician didn't know what he was doing he just didn't think that it was allowed. for others it was just a lack of common cense. but it does happen. and I even seen where a AHJ red taged a job because he interpited it as un-nessasary equipment should not be located in the classified area.
