We are adding an addition to our home. This addition, which is two story, is near the input electrical service connection. What code requirement is applicable (i.e., distance from input service pole, distance from input service lines, etc.) for the home addition?

Re: Input Electrical Service

2002 NEC

230.9(A)

230.9(B)

230.9(C)

230.24

I am curious why a homeowner would want to know this, you should never consider working on these lines yourself.

Re: Input Electrical Service

Thanks for the reply and references.

We are not planning on moving the lines. We are concerned that the 2 story home addition may not meet the code as regards distance to the service lines and distance to the service pole at the existing house.

Incidently, the addition is nearly complete; the GC and Electrical subcont. stated that they already checked this out on the plans vs. code during the planning stages.

Any thoughts? My code book is not handy (at work), in summary, what is the distance to any other plane of the addition (e.g., side of new addition) to the service lines?

Re: Input Electrical Service

There are a lot of exceptions to these code articles you should really look at the book yourself.

But in general minimum 3' feet from the edge of the roof, 8' feet above roofs, 3' feet from building openings (windows, doors, etc.) and 10' feet above projections (balcony's).
