I am glad to see this issue is being investigated and corrected, however, I do wish when they make these reports that they insert a little buffer to scale things out to the big picture.

With over 400 jurisidictions and thousands of inspectors in the state of Florida, these types of incidences are going to happen. But I believe the far majority of building departments and inspectors are doing things the RIGHT way.

I certainly don't mean that they should down play the seriousness of this issue or sweep building department problems under the rug, but, it should also be stated that we have a heavily regulated industry, with many watch dog programs, and GOOD people and organizations (like BOAF / IAEI) that work to make Florida the safest and best construction industry in the nation.

Last year, we had a few caught here in New Jersey, and I can assure you the large majority of inspectors, here are professional, and are also doing things the Right way.

How someone with a pension vested would throw it away, for a fast buck is beyond my reasoning.

All aspiring building officials should be made to watch this news clip. It would certainly drive home the importance of accurate record keeping and the need for proper certification/licensing and not working out of the area of expertise and accreditation.
What a myriad paperwork trail will now have to be delved into to clean this up.

Despite the many inaccurate media references, employees caught in various acts of corruption and other wrongdoings do not ever "lose" their vested pensions.

An ERISA covered pension, as well as Social Security benefits are pretty darn near untouchable.

Years ago I worked as a Building/Electrical/PLumbing/HVAC Inspector. My main job was making sure mobile homes were correctly set up--that's why all the certs.
My predecessor had been asked to resign (he was fired). He was signing off and not even going out TO the sites. He was busted when a hurricane came through and pulled up about 100 screw tie downs from sandy soil. Apparently, the hurricane was so strong that when the screw tie down came out of the ground, the screw was left in.
If you have ever seen these 1-piece units, it takes about 1/2 hr to screw one in by hand. Each trailer has 6-12.

If I was still there I could retire....

I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something-something I can use
People love it when you lose,
They love dirty laundry

Well, I coulda been an inspector, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I dont have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
Give us dirty laundry

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em all around

We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who
Comes on at five...

Apologies to Don Henley.

I know of a private third-party electrical inspector around here that needs to be investigated. I was in a new home recently and saw his r/w sticker and when I looked around it was unbelievable. Here's a short list from memory:
  • NM cables stapled too closely to the edges of 2x4 stud walls.
  • NM stapled way too tightly. (to the point of damaging the jacket)
  • Bundling all over the place
  • 14/3 travellers on with 12/2 lighting circuit.
  • 2 different cables (12/2 & 12/3) to a bath heat/fan/light
  • Temporary lighting circuit had temporary receptacles on same circuit.
  • no clue on how to make up egc's.
Geez. And an okay to cover sticker on the window. The sticker was even stuck on the window upside down...couldn't help but notice that. Kinda made me think the sticker was brought to the job from a contractor, not an inspector.
