I'm going to add two ceiling fans to this pergala and does not seem easy to use 1/2" pvc and I was hoping to install the fans to the bottom of the wood.

In my research of parts it appears I could also use UF wire and that would make for easier routing and a smaller footprint.

Any suggestions? Screenshot_20230521-104937_Gallery.jpg

Drill straight up through the beams and the 2x4s, and run cable or conduit on top of the wood, so it can't be seen from below. Seal the holes at the top to keep rain out.

Yes! That's the answer! Conduit would be too big, but uf cable will work. Thoughts on if I should try and protect it from the direct sunlight?

Don't answer that, I have it figured out. I'll make the channel a little deeper on top and caulk the top to protect it.

Does the building code permit that? I have no idea of what the rules would be for drilling vertically through a beam. I would not want to do it without something in the building code that says I can do that.

No. It doesn't. Conceal the feeds above and do at most, single drops to the fans. Exposed pipe of any amount would look like crap on woodwork like that.. so less is more. Try drilling or notching in front of the g.c., see what he says. I would still just stick to emt for paintability, just in case. The millwork hardware is flat black so that would look tastfull.

Sorry, Joe, but I don't see a 7/16" hole weakening a 2x10 that much, especially when the neighboring joists and the purlins are certainly capable of holding two of them up.

And . . .

Sorry dude, im trying to be nice without insulting hickcraft...
After i donate 4 hours of my time helping you make money in private messages and phone calls... You have no authority... Drill it. I do not care. Im just a different electrician. No harm.

I'm not going to drill the supporting beam. I have a gfi outlet to install near the rock in the corner, I'm just going to hide the wires and go up above as quick as possible.

I'm sorry for getting you upset. It wasn't that serious.

🤔 You're not the OP.

I meant drill through the two joists, not the main beams.

I'm not looking forward to this little project. On one hand it is such a nice house and I want the wires to be hidden. But the amount of work to chisel, drill and route a cable seems too much. Emt will work but won't be pleasing to the eye, but maybe that's the price you pay when we come in after the project is finished.

sleave the UFwith black painted emt the UF on the straight joist runs with just cable running above the beam drilled 2 inches above the bottom and centered so it wont be visible.
