Installation in a Suspended Ceiling

I've been asked to install a wireless router above a suspended ceiling in an office.

This would required installing a 120VAC receptacle in above the ceiling and plugging the router into it. Is this permissable?

I know you're not supposed to drop a cord down through a tile and plug it into a recep mounted below the ceiling. What's the difference...the hole in the tile?

You can install the recep above the ceiling, you can't plug the router into it. See 400.8 NEC.

If the cord for the router has a wall wart on it, then the cord is low voltage, and it is proably OK above the ceiling.

If the ceiling is a plenum return, that may be another issue.

That sounds like a winer to me and probaly cheaper than adding receptacle. Most likely could be added at the main router.

How does that solve anything ?

If the router has a wall wart, and the ceiling space isn't a plenum return, then I don't see any reason why the router and receptacle can't be installed above the ceiling.
