i have recently moved into a house and discovered that 2 receptacles are installed sideways. in otherwords the ground is not pointing up or down as you would expect.

is this a code violation and what section is it?

thank you in advance

Re: installation of receptacles

If you come to my area, you will find that most all of our receptacles are mounted sideways, generally, ground to the right. This is because we are a pipe & wire area as opposed to NM and plastic boxes. It is the general belief, at least as far as I can confirm, that since the non-metallic box manufacturers provide you the nails in the short dimension of the box, the orientation is predetermined for the 90% of the nation where NM wiring methods are used. We orient the ground to the right so that, [I'm told], should you have to work on a receptacle live, you have a better opportunity to view the "hot" which would be on top, while removing it from the grounded box and drywall ring.

Doing a quick search on this forum,[alone], was able to come up with quite a few threads on an Up/Down orientation issue. Here are some links:

Ryan,
my friend I would buy you a beer
I love that sentiment, (I,m a lush :D ) and would like to think with any differences that may and will occure here, we all are friends. I wouldn't think we were accomplishing anything without some dissention.

Take care Ryan.
