I have to install a bus duct switch into a 480v 1000a vertical duct. Is it safe to install this switch without a shut down? I know this sounds silly, but other electrician i know (who are well seasoned) seem to feel that it can be installed safely while the bus duct is energized. My gut says otherwise. Your advice?:-?

To put it bluntly, the other electrician is a total idiot...NO it is NOT safe to install a bus switch without a shutdown, There was a thread recently dealing with the same question, and the mfgr of the bus duct specifically warned that a shutdown is a must.
Put it this way, what's more of an issue, a few hours to do it right, or days of shutdown (and possible fatality) and replacement of a lot of bus duct?

There have been many injuries and some deaths attributed to installing the switch to a live bus.
If the other electrician is so confident to perform this live, let him do it.
