Installing Device Boxes

I remember reading something somewhere that explained an easier and faster way to install device boxes for roughing in a new house. I recall very little but there was some type of rod or 1x2 lumber board that held the device box to it (don't remember how) and the only thing you had to do was place the 1x2 against the stud and nail the box which sped up the installation of the boxes for rough-in. Does anybody know anything remotely simular to this technique?

I use either the 2x4 cut to length method or the height of my hammer...whichever seems easier at the time.

I use a stick.

Cut a stick of EMT to 44", and cut another the height of your hammer (mine's 13").

Tape the two together, and you have a standard height for countertops, switches, wall receptacles, etc.

And when you forget an outlet or two, you can use your hammer for a quick stick. :)

I believe that Doc is referring to what construction people call a 'story pole'. It is used for consistancy in the height of various items like window and door openings, etc. One can certainly be made with notches for box locating.

Story poles are great except when the floor isn't level. It looks really bad when all of the boxes in a tile backsplash are at different heights because the floor was pitched. When accuracy isn't necessary, a story pole is an effective tool. When accuracy is necessary, the story pole should be used with a benchmark not from the floor.

I use a story pole or whatever when I rough with students, it reduces the errors, I always use a level and stright edge (strappin or fur strip) for counter outlets

I'm not in the construction business but would it be worth it to use one of those lazer levels that projects a line around the entire room?
