Hi guys, is it alright to mount a non metallic round box in the stucco, I don't think the old work box would accommodate the thickness of the stucco? Am I going to have to open up the sheet rock from behind and probably install a block to mount my junction box to? Thanks for any input.

Maybe. There could be plywood or OSB behind it all, if you're lucky. Then you could use some spacers like 1/2" PVC pipe and long screws. If not, you may have to open a wall to get some support.

There’s a variety of remodel fixture boxes. Some have captive screws on the side, some have wings, some have a large metal bracket behind them.

I have and use several styles. When I hat back to the shop I’ll take some pics of a few.

I would first decide whether I'll want just a cable hole or a recessed box. If the latter, I would cut through the stucco with an abrasive hole-saw down to solid material and see what it is, and how deep it is.

The supplying cable should be able to be fished down inside the wall from above, either through the top plate if attic-accessible, or from surface-mount channel at the ceiling if unavoidable and acceptable.

I never considered just popping a hole in the wall and running the supplying cable through it, I thought I needed a box, I was thinking of a 4 in square metal box with a mud ring , I was planning on having to go in through the back of the sheet rock? There is an existing circuit for the garage door opener in EMT with a 4 in metal box within a few feet of one of the lights, I will probably tap in there and continue with EMT or MC cable. I'm going there now to have a look at it
