Installing light fixture and switch box

Just a stupid question about residental wiring. I am installing a light fixture box and a 2 gang switch box in my home. Both are next to studs. I removed the new work boxes by pryed out the nails, but leaving the drywall in good shape. I looked at old work boxes, but I need to use metal boxes to keep the system grounded. Now comes the stupid question. Can I just take a metal box and run a screw or nail into the stud to secure it? It seems better then using the drywall. Does the code allow this? Is there a book that covers theses type of things? Please advise.
Thanks,
J
