Installing MC cable on studs

Just had a comment about strapping mc cable to vertical wood/metal f studs on walls on the side of the studs (vertical runs)... inspector sez that the mc cable has to be an inch and quarter from the face of the stud, just like drilled holes for wire.
can't find anything in the NEC about side of stud clearance from face of stud, can anyone else? First time this one has come up... Dennis Franklin

Although the 1.25" spacing is required for running parallel to framing members 300.4(D), the 1.25" spacing from the edge is not required when running through holes in metal studs.
