Installing PVC expansion couplings

I'm going to need to install some 3" PVC expansion couplings in cold weather. I've never used them before so how should I install them? Extended half-way, all the way out or all the way in, or somewhere in between?

They're going to be above ground but just barely - right at ground level

Well there will be some math involved with your desire to use this application,
there seems to be a lot of different considerations when using this device.
There's no way to answer your question directly!
