Went to look at a job to replace a bath fan with an "open attic" . Have to install a vent for it and this is what I found.

Looks like im buying a sharp knife, any suggestions on how to break this stuff away?

if its the soft kind and not the green hard kind they use in basements you can pull it out with your bare hands. a knife will work fine as well

I think I'd use a plastic blade or like hard straight edge and figure all the runs out.

All & PPE, a full face shield and a good vacuum

In a lot of ways I would rather see that than 14" of blown fiberglass.
