Interconnected smoke detectors

In a 3 family house, can you interconnect all the smokes from every floor and hallway together? I saw this the other day and scratched my head. I found in the residential code (R314.5) it says must be interconnected in each individual unit, but am wondering if that wording indicates you can't tie them all together.

No, the interconnection is only inside of each unit.

I've seen this in buildings that have been converted to apartments that don't have a fire alarm system or sprinklers.

Without looking up the exact code section, AFAIK, you can not have a circuit from apartment "A" supplying outlets in apartment "B".

I would expect that to apply to power (including lighting) wiring but not to control wiring including signaling. On the other hand I would not want one occupant to have the supply for all alarms to be on their individual panel.
Maybe if fed from the house panel if there is one?

I assume OP is talking about regular residential smoke detectors not fire alarm system.

I agree, which is why I used the specific wording alarm instead of detector.
They are commonly referred to as smoke detectors, which confuses things.

That's a good point. It's 210.25B. These are wired off the house panel, so besides nuisance from someones burnt toast, something could be added to that circuit in that apartment and the tenant wouldn't be paying for it.

jurisdiction, audible fire alarm signals shall sound only in an
individual dwelling unit, suite of rooms, or similar area and

fire alarm systems outside these locations. Remote annunciation
