I would like to get my license to do some small side jobs on a part time basis. I have an associates in electronics and am almost finished with my BS in electrical and computer engineering. What would I have to do to get a license for residential electrical work. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Each State has different requirements for licensing of electricians, so the best advice I can give you is to check with your local building department to see what the requirements are in you area.

In Maryland you would need to work for seven years under the "direct supervision" of a licensed Master Electrician and then pass an Master Electrician Examination. They may count a portion of your schooling toward the required experience time.

Thanks for all the advice. Is that list accurate...in pennsylvania you don't need a license? I think I will call the local inspector as you guys suggested to confirm.
