For those of you who are under the CPC - California Plumbing Code, which is based on the 2006 Uniform Plumbing code ( I think ) - take a look at page 391 under identification.

A plumber friend of mine called long-distance tonight to tell me he failed his PLUMBING inspection because he used plastic pipe in the house and the plumbing code ( page 391) says if you use plastic, you must put a label on the electrical service panel indentifying the plumbing system as plastic and not metal. He did not have the label, so he failed. Piping was fine.

He says he will fax the page over to me, so I should have it over the weekend when I stop in at the office. He swears it is not a California amendment - it applies to any and all jurisdictions using that paticular code book. I think it is based upon the Uniform Plumbing Code, but I forgot to ask him. It may be based upon the IAPMO codes. (International Association of Plumbers and Mechanical Officials). Then again those may be the same thing. I will have to find out for sure.

Anyone ever heard of this? As a sparky, have you ever been called out for lack of a plumbing pipe sticker on your panel?

EDIT: Spelling and clarification

Never heard of it - locally (SF) all plumbing is metallic.... While I rarely work out of town - and not since the new code - not heard of this. But I think it's cool.... Many of us go on about grounding and bonding due to what a plumber may or may not do....

Also - "Failing" at that point is a "Correction" IMO.

06 UPC BTW http://www.bsc.ca.gov/apprvd_chngs/appStan.htm

For the most part - the '07 CEC is '05 NEC without subtaintial ammendments....

that is pretty instering event to know about that one.

At least we can keep our eyes open on that one in case they will spread around here but AFAIK i havent see the label around here but heard some talking going on but i don't have anything hard details yet.

Merci,Marc

Seems like the plumbing should fail for not putting the labels on.

He did fail his plumbing inspection, that is why he called. He said they are just starting to use CPVC out there (Jan 1st) and this is the first time he has been callled on this correction.

When you get it, could you send the article #?

We are just finishing up about a dozen homes under
the 2007 CA, half of which have CPVC, and 6 of which
have PEX, and I was wondering if there was some specific
wording they wanted the plumber to stick to the panel.

Thanks.

about time

about time

;) about time plumbers get equal treatment
now when will they have to affix labels showing the "maximum water pressure available" (AIC) and "caution: misuse may cause injury or drowning" to each fixture (Flash) and some type of "childproof" faucets, and oh yes!, warning labels on all tubs.
The electrical lobbyist need to talk to the plumbing manfacturers.

When I visited my relatives in the Phoenix area last month, I naturally had to go investigate the main panel, and written on the inside of it was "Non-metallic plumbing system." I had no idea why that was written in there, but now I understand. :)

I will be glad to. I thought I would get over to the office this morning, but my bride decided I really did not want to go to the office.

I will brush up on the FAQ's for posting pictures and should have something up and available tomorrow (Monday).
