Intermatic timer switch

That would be an unusual type of main breaker for a residence. Can you give any more detail?
The electrical panel still has a main breaker but the switch in question is wired next to the panel. When the switch is used the main breaker in the panel will make a knocking sound and all power will shut off.Main breaker in panel does not trip off

I came across an intermatic timing switch today in a residential property that trips the main breaker in the electrical pane. What is the purpose of that?

An electrician needs to look at it.

Now there is a switch before there was a time clock.
I have heard of shunt trip breakers used when the main is in a locked off area.
Maybe this is a Grow house and the timer switches from to and from the Meter bypass.
I have read about this. Meter is bypassed at night when there are no meter readers or techs present to see any issues. So the theory went. The person got caught.
Why the Poster is being so vague I don't know

We got is figured out, this was a former show home. Realtors would hit one switch and all the lights would come on in the house. The system has been removed. Thanks for the help guys.

Still confuses me, if the timer would trip the main (in which I could only imagine it being a shunt trip breaker) then how would a switch reset the main?

Are you sure the knock sound wasn't a contactor nearby that was energized by the time clock to energize many lighting circuits of the show house?
