To hook up an Air Handling Unit, you would typically need flex-cable because the Unit is typically externally isolated (the unit itself has springs on it's base and then it is set on a pad).

You need to install flex-cable because the vibrations from the Unit could cause the rigid conduit to come loose.

If the Air Handling Unit were to have the fan itself internally isolated, would that same rule apply and is there any reference in the NEC that can verify this?

Re: Internally Isolated Fan Motor Hookup

The NEC does not specify the wiring method to be used to connect equipment. I would think that any equipment such as you describe should use a flexible wiring method to facilitate removal/service.

Re: Internally Isolated Fan Motor Hookup

Rigid conduit would also defeat the purpose of the isolating springs.
