I have worked with the NEC for 30 years and am quite familiar with it. My company has recently decided to expand to China. I have tried to locate a Chinese code similar to the NEC but have had no luck. Does such a code exist? If yes, where can I get a copy?

There are times when I look at the NEc I think it is written in Chinese

Re: International codes

It has been a while, (11 years) but it's been my experience that China is rather eclectic with regard to standards. I've seen them use NEC, IEC, JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) and seat of the pants. What we did about 13 years ago was contact the Chinese consulate and asked them. They were very pleased to help.

They tended toward IEC and JIS, but a major US manufacturer had NEMA XP foundries there. Ultimately, we used the NEC where we could adapt it to international equipment. That, and a job I did in Africa a few years earlier, was where I developed my generally antagonistic views of mixing the two area classification systems.

Re: International codes

Do an Internet search for "international electrical code," and you will find the "International Code Council (ICC) Electrical Code." You can buy it for under $10.

It remains a question as to whether China has adopted this code. That you will have to discover by some other means; I have no idea.

Re: International codes

Is the International Electric Code meant as a supplement to the NEC? I have a copy and have not found it particularly useful. It is only 36 pages and it does not touch on safety. Pretty much it touches on procedures for permits, fees, enforcement, inspection, etc. Is there an international electrical code that is comparable to the NEC in terms of content?

Re: International codes

Hello ryan,

The NEC 2002 that I have has a title of NEC 2002, National Electrical Code, International Electrical Code Series
