I need help transffering from yellow pages/phonebook advertising to internet advertising. What has everyone done to accomplish this? What kind of budget have you used? What kind of companies have you used? I was told $1500 a month by one company with $2.36 a click. Yellow pages YP.com when looking for electrical contractors lists a glass glazers in town before my company. Got any suggestions? I run a small service oriented company. No new construction. Please refrain from the term SERVICE MAGIC, I think of it as an oxymoron. Gota get on the net wondering what others have experienced.

There are places on the net where you can register and host a web site rather cheaply. Dotster.com I think it costs around $15 to register a donaim and about $9.95 a month to host. You can make your own site rather easily from a template you can get free on their site. If you would rather pay someone to develope a site for you it can be done for a few hundred. You can or have someone submit your site for search engine indexing. If you don't have a google account sign up for 1 free. They have tools that you can read about that explain about it. You then need to promote your site so it moves to the top of search results. You can do this for free also. The way it works with search engines basically is the more popular a sight is the higher it returns on searches.

You can promote your site by submitting articles for publication and including your site as a link in the article and in credits for the article and doing the same in forums and social media. I have seen people that that have done this and returned at least 3 results to themselves on the front page of google.

that's an awful lot of money for net presence.... two bucks a click? geez...

there are services who will pimp your google results, so you come up at the
top of the search. they do it by googlebombing.. i don't think they are
hugely expensive.

there is also adsense by google, where you pay google to be put at the
top of the list.

domains are cheap.... godaddy.com works. dirt cheap. i'm using
something called powweb.com, 'cause i had it 10 years ago, and
am too lazy to move it.

i need to redo my web stuff.. right now, there is just an index
page, and i spent about 10 minutes making it, and it shows. :-/

for online, there is also angie's list, for those with a bent for
residential. some people swear by it. dunno. haven't gone there.

Looking at it from a customers' viewpoint ...

I'm remodeling my own house, so for the first time I'm looking for various contractors. It's amazing how many contractors don't come up at all, not even in the phone book listings!

Let me invent a firm, just for illustration. Let's say you wnated to contact "Amish Electric." Simply typing that into google ought to make it pop up. Period.

Any of the links - be they directories or your web page- should point you to Amish Electric. They better list your web page.

Your web page needs two minimal things: to give out your address / phone number ... AND to have a hot link for a direct e-mail inquiry.

It's even nicer if the page lets the customer know what you do, and where you are. One nice thing about SOME equipment manufacturers is that their web sites will direct folks to authorized contractors in their areas. Go to a web site for an air conditioning manufacturer to see it in action for yourself.

Lest anyone out there think "Amish Electric" is a cool name to use .... well, I own it. It's not easy to find my web site www.amishelectric.biz because I'm not actively seeking work- I'm fully committed at this time.
