I have dropped off the internet two times due to the destruction by virus contamination.

I am glad to hear the authorities have caught the "big tagger" Maybe these misguided individuals will realize they can and will be caught, and go to jail.

This media is excellent as long as everyone obeys the protocol.

I only wish to have the computer skill these vandals have. What a waste.

Re: Internet Vandal

I agree (I hate agreeing with you so much lately - are you mellowing or am I? :D ), I am running ZoneAlarm fire wall plus McAfee anti-virus. I feel fairly safe but I still don't feel like it is 100%.

Charlie: I know the reason you don't always agree with me. It is something I guessed before you mentioned it in your personal profile.

I have had articles published in a Newsletter by Mensa. I am not a member, but did qualify from my military GCT score, and the result of the Stanford Binet examination. I did not accept membership due to philosophical differences.

I am pleased that your caliber is active in the industry. Hang in there, the industry is going to make some radical changes in the next few years.

Hello Bennie
It is good to see you posting again. You always have my keen attention, even if we are not always in agreement.
You have sparked my interest again with the statement you made to Charlie about radical changes about occur in the industry. Would you elaborate more on this? I am very curious what you may have in mind.
Thanks

Pierre

Pierre: If everyone agreed with me it would be a very boring world. Sometimes I don't even agree with me, I can't stand a liar and sometimes I lie  .

Often I post a controversial opinion merely to get at the truth. Even a wrong opinion is better than none at all. However, a wrong technical interpretation can be a disaster. Best to test with words rather than action.

Re: Internet Vandal

I did not accept membership due to philosophical differences.
I am curious what the philosophical differences are since there is only one requirement for membership. Members include all walks of life from janitors to judges to convicts. The only activity I am involved with is the Bridge SIG (Special Interest Group). I used to be involved in the EIEIO (Electricians, Inspectors, Engineers, and Interested Others) SIG. David Shapiro heads up that SIG.

. . . the industry is going to make some radical changes in the next few years.
In my opinion, the electric utilities will disappear but it will take longer than a few years. I believe hydrogen will take the place of gasoline and will be derived from water and gasoline. Much more efficient solar cells will convert water into hydrogen to run fuel cells for home power and gasoline will power automobile fuel cells or hydrogen will be made available at refueling stations. I believe some solar power may be used along with wind, water, and a host of other alternate methods to produce electricity. In the far future (100 years or so) long distance transmission of power will not be done, power plants will become relics, and small groups of homes will become islands. The only power plants that will remain will be those that produce power for large urban areas such as New York, Los Angeles, etc.

I also see the super large cities giving way to the Internet and the suburbs. Central large metropolitan areas will not be necessary as people work at homes and businesses will build away from the urban centers. Those power plants will house fast breeder or fusion reactors. A fast breeder reactor uses spent uranium as damper rods in order to enrich the uranium to actually make more fuel that the plant uses. A fusion reactor (which hasn't been developed yet) will convert hydrogen to helium and lots of electricity.

For those who wonder at the efficiency of nuclear fuel, consider the conversion of matter into energy. The formula E=MC squared is for the actual mass converted. Notice I said the hydrogen would be converted to helium. In the process, some mass will be lost to energy but not much and massive amounts of energy will be produced. The only way to completely convert mass to energy is to introduce matter and antimatter for complete (almost) annihilation.

Life spans will be extended to 200 to 400 years. Most people will die because of some sort of accident, not old age (I sometimes wonder how I made it this far when I consider some of the stupid things I have done).

I also believe world peace will happen with the next 300 to 800 years. I am taking bets on that one. :D

Charlie: I have communicated with David, a few times in the past years.

I was living in Riverside Calif. When there was a scandal, you may know about it. I won't go into detail or any further at this time. This was the reason for my refusal.

Charlie, I hope you had a nice vaction.

You said,

I would like to be around for that but it would mean this forum would have to go.

I like when somebody 'stirs the pot', the reaction usually leads to a great discussion. I was not complaining about our (sometimes) disagreeing, it has actually made me think much harder before I say something.

Charlie
The demise of the 'City' has been foretold for ages, maybe this time it may happen. I think the city will change in the future, but will become more vibrant as technology allows us to financially be able to do more with less.
As far as living 200 to 400 years old, that would be amazing! I just wonder, at what age would we be 'grumpy old men'? :(
The change in technology for power supply should keep the electrical installer quite busy when that situation comes to fruition.
Hopefully voice recognition will be good enough that I do not have to type anymore. :D

Re: Internet Vandal

The problem with generating and using electrical energy, is there has to be an equilibrium. The production must meet the demand.

When either one becomes unbalanced there is a blackout.

The capacity of a power system has to handle peak load, even if the load is of a short time duration.

When a method of storing energy during the low demand times and using it during the peak demand we can cut our grid and generating capacity to a third of the present size.

My utility bill reflects 49 KWh per day. This averages to 2 KW for 24 hours. 2 KW would require an 8 amp service, or 16 if only 120 volt.

Re: Internet Vandal

My email box is getting filled with repeated messages. I had 14 this morning of the same thing.

I propose, that when the perpetrators are caught, they be sentenced to life in a ditch running 4 inch rigid gal. conduit. Or installing a pull chain light in the basement of all the portable toilets. :p

I think he should get three hots and a cot. The three hots should be Spam, Spam, Spam, dessert Spam, Spam, Spam & Spam, and so forth. The cot should have a Spam filled mattress too. If it leaked a little Spam fat/juice/slime that would be just ducky.

[Note: There are four things you need to do to protect yourself if you are using a PC:
1. Run Windows Update weekly.
2. Run an updated Anti-Virus program.
3. Have a hardware and/or software firewall. I like both: Use the hardware firewall to close your Ports, and use an ingress/egress Firewall like Zone Alarm to monitor INBOUND & OUTBOUND traffic.
4. Never open an attachment. If you must open an attachment, wait three or four days: Then update your Anti-Virus program: Scan the attachment for viruses: Then open it. You can also submit an attachment to Symantec and they will scan if for you and send you a Beta update if it turns out to be a virus.

Symantec sells Norton Anti-Virus that will scan incoming and outgoing email

Zone Alarm is a personal firewall that will scan ingress and egress

HouseCall will run a FREE online virus scan for you if you don't have an Anti-Virus program yet

Re: Internet Vandal

I just finished a skan for viruses. I had one file infected. The skanning software corrected it. My computer was acting weird. I have two ISPs they were trying to launch at the same time.

Put that computer vandal in a cell with his 7 computers and no power.

Re: Internet Vandal

Here is another little program to add to the other great suggestions on protection on the Internet.
It removes spy-ware that many websites download to your hard drive most just track your usage and what web sited you might go to but some even can track your key strokes and this can be dangerous as many of us use our computers for personal business. they can even do this while your off-line and send the info later when you log back on.
This is one of the best ones I have found to rid your computer of these little spy-ware programs and the best part it's free just like Zone-Alarm

Here's the web site for it after you load it dont run it click on update first then run it you will be suprized at how much spy-ware will be on your computer.

Good catch! That's the belt. Here's the suspenders: SpyBot Search & Destroy

SpyBot will catch stuff that Ad-Aware misses and Ad-Aware will catch that which SpyBot misses. All programs have gaps. You put them together: No more gaps. It's like wearing a belt and suspenders. [Gap quote credit to Rocky Balboa of "Rocky" fame]. SpyBot is FREE and should be updated after installing. Update it each time you go to use it. Be careful some of your programs rely on SpyWare to function properly. The good thing is both Ad-Aware and SpyBot give you a chance to restore any deleted SpyWare.
