Interpretation

I need to make sure I am interpreting this correctly. 6/3 Al, Se, XHHW-2 cable used as a feeder from an exterior panel run in wall insulation and ceiling to a range. I interpret as only being able to use 60 deg col at 40 amps. Because of Se cable is NMC section 334.80 and Se used as feeder per 338.10 (B)(4). Is Se considered an NMS cable and Is this correct interpretation? Someone trying to use 50 amp breaker on 6/3 Al, Se, XHHW-2 cable as feeder to a range.

You cannot use 50 amps on a #6 aluminum and the wire is a branch circuit not a feeder. A feeder would feed something that has one or more overcurrent protective device after it, such as a feeder to another panel.

Se is not nmc it is in a different section--art. 338 for se and 334 for nm

Btw, welcome to the forum

Under the 2017 NEC, the #6 Al SE will be OK at 50A.

Tn is currently under the 2008. We will be going to the 2017 on 10/1/18. So if the OP uses the 50A now the house will burn down but if he waits until October it will be fine!:D

If the stove is 9.6kW or less, or if using Column C of Table 220.55 and the stove is 12kW or less, just have the installer change to a 40A breaker

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks for all the feedback. From what I read and understand in 2014 NEC, 310.15(b)(16) allows 50 amps, however, from what I read in 338.10(4)(a) interior installation, excludes 334.80, but, backs Se down to the 60 deg, 40 amps anyway. The 2017 (switching to soon) looks like it only drops the temp to 60 deg on 10 awg and smaller. Since we're going to 2017 in a few months, no sense making him change it.

Great attitude. Some inspectors would not budge on it. Around here they allowed us to use the 2017 before the adoption date opccured but everything would have to be done by the 2017 code. You can't pick and choose.

This issue has gone on for so long. I hope they keep it there as it has never been an issue. I know one of the guys who fought long and hard to get this changed.

Btw, my answer was based on 2014 since the op's profile stated 2014.
