Where I work we are implementing a new electrical inventory system. Is there an industry standard system for the description of electrical items?
Example: A 4 square box can be called a 4S, J-box, etc.

Re: Inventory

Tom: Check with NEMA for standard terms. The description covers many types of the same thing. The catalog number must be used to be specific.

I once used Mil.Specs. when ordering material. I like the terminology used in the catalogs.

Re: Inventory

Tom: For computer inventory control use the UPC code for identifying the different parts.

Re: Inventory

tom,
where i used to work, we had common name for the items and everyone understood what that item was.
maybe your industry has a similar system terminology you could use. if not, you will have to have an index book available for everyone to use as they get used to the new system.

Re: Inventory

Tom,
I once worked everyday with a deaf electrician, who had alot of terms which I find myself using every now and again.
4 square === 4"square j-box
slap-on === 4" round nail-on box
shunt === seu from meter socket to panel box
squeeze === tube of noalox
Every one that worked there knew these and other terms. I would agree with James and suggest maybe use what your company/supplier both understand.
