I'm looking at NFPA 70 504.10(A) and seeing that the IS associated apparatus (barrier) example given shows the barrier in the non-hazardous location with the apparatus in the hazardous location, which is what I've always seen and done in the past. I'm currently being asked if it's possible for an IS barrier to be located in a hazardous location at all, since the site logistics and scope of project make locating the barriers in the non-hazardous location quite burdensome. According to 504.10(B), the "associated apparatus shall be permitted to be installed in any hazardous (classified) location for which it has been identified", which seems at odds with the example and direction provided in 504.10(A). I've found various barriers that are listed for C1D1/2 with the relevant groups, so I'm wondering why these barriers would hold this rating if they are not allowed to be installed in hazardous locations.
Ideally the PLC I/O, barrier, and apparatus would all be able to be located in a hazardous location in this instance. Can someone provide more insight and a sanity check with any similar experience?
