Hello All,

I am looking for some guidance regarding FR rated clothing. Our Facility has generously provided FR rated clothing for the employees (hospital maintenance electricians) but as I read more about the materials and treatments done to these clothes (we are using Cintas), it sounds like carcinogenic chemicals are used to treat the garments. Any thought would be appreciated.

Live long enough and 100% of humans would die of cancer. We're not designed for physical immortality. I know California is rabid about labeling everything under the sun as a potential carcinogen, largely based, IIRC, on the Ames test. Bruce Ames, the guy who developed the test, thinks it's way overused and mostly not appropriate for the sort of "ban all chemicals" hysteria now in fashion.

Well Cintas dosent make anything (And they sure should not be laundering them with any chemicals) so it all depends on what the material is used in your uniforms (Should say on the tag).

Also, don't confuse FR clothing with arc rated clothing.

FR rated clothing is typically a blend of cotton and rayon. Which one are you worried about?

Other may be Nomex.

I used Cintas for a year and then just bought the clothing outright from Aramark. Cintas was unreliable in prompt delivery and it was cheaper long run to own and wash it myself. Just avoid bleach.

I typically wore it 8 hours per day for 5 years and I'm perfectly fine fin fi f fi fin fine:roll:

There are a number of items that are rated for both. The stuff I wear is rated for flash fires, (FR) per NFPA 2112 as well as having an HRC 2 rating for arc flash.
