Is local grounding of AC compressors required by the NEC?

A while back someone told me I needed to ground the compressor locally in addition to connecting the EGC. I can't remember who, but I believe it was an HVAC contractor.

tell him to stick to HVAC. i never had a problem with an inspector with the grounding of a compressor. its just a piece of equipment thats located outside. all it needs is the EGC. he probably read in the manual that you need to ground the unit or something like that.
