Is low voltage wiring for motion sensors the same as signal wire?

I'm installing a lighting system that is controlled by motion sensors that are connected via Cat 5. In CEC & NEC the mixed voltages of 12 v and 120 volt are OK if insulations are rated for 120 Volts. But the fire code says signal wires can't be in the same conduit with 120 volt loads. Just wondering if anyone can direct me to where I can learn definition of signal wire. Thanks!

That is not always true based on the rules in the NEC. If the low voltage system has a Class 2 or 3 power supply, the low voltage wiring cannot be run with the power wiring no matter what the voltage rating of the wire is.

Not sure about the fire codes. For the NEC look at 300.3(C)(1), but make sure you read Informational Note #1 along with the section text.
You need information from the manufacturer as to the Class rating of the control wiring. Some are suitable for use as a Class 1 system and then they can be mixed with the power conductors.
