Would a main breaker/fuse disconnect be required between electric meter and Automatic Transfer Switch? Load side of ATS feeds three main breaker loadcenters.

Good question

Good question

Is the disconnect required if the transfer switch is service entrance rated ?
What code article applies?

Usually, it is the inclusion of a service disconnect that qualifies an ATS as being service rated.

I guess it depends on the equipment being installed. Generac makes 100-400A
RTS transfer switches that are service entrance rated. At a recent seminar, the tech said these models satisfy code as a disconnecting means without the additional equipment.

The Generac models spoken about incorporate a HACR type circuit breaker plus a transfer switch into one service entrance rated unit. Without the disconnect it would be extremely difficult to do any repairs on the transfer switch. On one repair the voltage was to low to pull in the contacts so the coil burned up. Had to disassemble most of it to fix. Home owner install on that one. I suppose you could pull the meter but that is frowned upon around here.

RTS Series Transfer Switches

RTS Series Transfer Switches

Generac (Guardian) has two types of RTS transfer switches.
There is the RTSN which does not have a utility or generator breaker and the RTSE which has a utility breaker and a generator breaker.
I would suggest that you check with your AHJ before installing the RTSN and make sure that they will accept it.
Here in South Florida, a generator disconnect that is readily accessible is required and they do not consider having to remove the sidepanel of the generator as readily accessible.
The RTS series with breakers is only available in 100 and 200 amp at this time although we have been told that a 400 amp model is in the works.
In addition, make sure that the AHJ will accept a 200 amp breaker on a 150 or 175 amp service. We have a couple of jurisdictions where we have to change the breaker in the ATS to match the service size and this is costly.
