Is NM-B permitted in unfinished residential auto garage?

Even in an attached garage we never run perpendicular to the studs. Just vertical drops to the receps and switches. If it's got any kind of "workspace" we sleeve NM in EMT for the drops into 4squares. A little overboard but I believe a safer install. "Hey son, grab me that come-along over there. It's hanging on that wire.":D

detached garage

detached garage

Whether a garage is attached or detached to a residential dwelling is irrelevent. It is still a residential garage unless it has a use for something other than a residential garage. The NEC looks at an attached and a detached residential garage (with power)as exactly the same.210.52(G)(1).
I agree that romex intalled through bored holes might be subject to physical damage and in my opinion would be a judgement call for the inspector.

Wow! What a blast from the past. Joe Ross was an icon in this northern NY area for decades. He worked for NEMA and was our premiere code expert and speaker. I miss him personally and professionally.

He lives in a city not too far from me ,.. 10 miles or so ,. and he is a great guy and is willing to help anyone in the trade with any problem , large or small ,.. he has never forgotten where he started out.

looks like a good place for my 2011 Code change proposal. beyond that when I look at 210.52(G) and then at 334.(II) it looks like a AHJ call to me. To my knowledge most of the inspectors in areas near the one I work, allow NM in detached garages (especially single family) but, of course, require it to comply with 334.15, if exposed.
