Is NM permitted?

I'm trying to clarify whether NM is permitted to be exposed underneath a home or not.
(The wood floor joists are 24" above grade and the crawl space is NOT enclosed)

334.12 "Uses Not Permitted" (A)(10)(d) states...where exposed or subject to excessive moisture or dampness.

Would this be considered "excessive"?

yes, it's excessive. I think that you may be able to use UF though -- even though I would not because of varmits -- use pipe

The code allows NMC to be used in this area per 334.10(B)(1). Types NM and NMS would not be allowed per 334.12(A)(10)(d).

look at chicago!! no NM at all all MC and EMT.

inspectors around here would shoot the NM down in a sec with an open crawl space under a house. Imagine what animals would do to that wire in that situation -- i've been in ATTICS where there were all kinds of shorts due to rodents chewing through NM.
