3 outside receps, 1 homerun for that 60' away from panel, straight shot.-----2 hours total

2 outside ceiling fans on a farmers porch. Hard tonge and grove ceiling, fish feed from each fan to 2 of the new outside receps, fishing about 20' each, 90 degree down the wall.-----6 hours total.

Replace 2 outside lights on the farmers porch.-----1 hour total.

9 hours total, would you guys be able to do it quicker or am I just about on it? All work is done off an 8' ladder, besides the receps of course.

Thanks for any input.

No drive time or material pickup time is included.

One thing I always figure in though is clean up of the site, and loading unloading of the truck. Although neather add up to much.

What if you run into some additional fish time due to obstuctions? That eats up a ton of my time, I need to find a better way to fish maybe.

Thank you.

What is the bid?
I charge between 280 + 325 for fans depending on:
Is there power in the ceiling already?
Is there a switch in the wall with attic access above?

Ext outlets: $85@
Home run: Min $125
Total 2 x(85) + 2 x (325) + 125 = $945 + any nifty speed/light control for those fans. Extra $35 for the price of gold (sorry copper  ).. .wait a min..extra $55

Its all T&M, I was just worried about planning on 9 hours of time to do such a job and having it be out of line.

Thank you.

I can't bid "what ifs"
What iff you drill thru a wire?
What iff you fall off the ladder on your __S? "Rated G"
What if you finish faster.
What if the Homeowners Wife walks out of the shower without a towel?
Whoops there goes the G rating...Bob. LOL

It sounds like a reasonable day's labor to me, maybe with an early knock off if the fan work goes smoothly but don't count on it.

Be sure to include planning/permitting, inspection, and travel on top of that. Oh yeah, and the fan switch. :)

Thanks guys, just wanted to make sure I wasnt out of line.

I dont charge travel time to and from a job, I think I should at least charge a small gas fee or something with the cost of gas now.

Also how do you charge for going to get materials if they are just normally stocked items in your truck? I dont charge myself.

All of that time is billable, and not billing for it can make the difference between profitability and just getting by. You don't need crazy markups and inflated bids, just a bit of realism: you should bill for the time you spend conducting business. Getting to the job site and stocking the truck are legitimate expenses that your customers, not you, should be paying for.

Funny things happen when you start getting paid for all of your work time -- vacations, for instance. ;)

9 hours sounds good to me, too. That's how I'd price it. If I did it quicker, good for me. :) If I priced it for 5 hours and did it in 9, bad for me :( I would consider T&M not to exceed.

If a job takes 5 hours, unless you have another job close by with a flexible customer, then you have eaten up a 8 hour day, weather or not you were actually on site. I would go with a 8 hour minimum for this job.

Thanks guys for all the input, I finished the job up tonight, came out perfect the homeowner was very impressed. Took 10 hours total, fishing the wire proved to be more difficult.

This small time GC sends me a print for a small addition to a Lake house. It has 588 ft/2 - kitchen, bath, utility, bed and living rooms. I poured over it, anticipating copper prices and shot him a high price.

I saw him 2 days later and he said, "Man, you hammered me on that Lake addition".

A few days after that copper jumped again.

Later he calls me and says, "When can you start?"

I asked if it was too high because I was curious if I was figuring my time correctly or not, I wanted to make sure I wasnt way off target.
