Situation: Carpenter constructs partion wall in basement blocking "in sight" water heater
disconnect, located in in service panel, from water heater. Do we call an EC, install a disconnect at the water heater, file a ticket, write up the carpenter fo doing electrical work?

the carpenter is doing carpenter work. it just happened that it impacted existing electrical work.

the GC is responsible for trade coordination.

Who says there is a GC?

Here the inspector is supposed to notify the property owner of violations beyond the ECs work.

I'm going to assume that the carpenter has no permit and the wall will NOT be inspected????? If it where, the resulting inspection would flag the issue.

That depends. Does a framing insp. need also knowledge of an electrical insp.?

I've heard of inspection departments that require permits and inspections for any walls that are built, then I've heard of those towns that only require permit/inspections for egress, structural, and/or fire wall changes.

It was assumption on my part that any inspector should know that a wall cant be built in front of a HWT blocking the controls, maintenance and/or removal. and wouldnt have anything to do with electrical.

Good point Rick. Our inspectors all have nextel two ways and we all comunicate between ourselves. If something is in question we will ask one of the other inspectors.(plumbing. mech, building, elctrical etc.)

Do you inspect the White House?? Who does/

The common thing I have seen in my area is where garages or carports are built. Years afterwards I am called out to give an estimate for electrical work that will involve changing the service. I look and see that the service lateral <sp> is only inches above the roofline of the garage or carport.

I often wondered if an inspection ever took place of said carport or garage and if so. did the framing insp. know that there was an electrical violation?

Yep, It's all over our town also.......IMO with Big Blue and Big O, its really hard for Code enforcement to keep up. I lost a job a while back because of a 200 service drop that was inches from the ridge of a un-inspected sun room addition....I wanted to update the service and they couldnt afford to do that also........

Federal property does not require inspection like non-fereral property. In fact federal property electrical work does not even require an electrician's license.
