I am backing up a 200amp panel with a 20kw generator with an ATS. The code allows the smaller generator is we use load shedding controls and we are. My question is can I size the wire from the generator to the transfer switch for 100amps? According the my calculations the 20kw will only put of about 84amps. Am I thinking properly?

Size to the feed from the generator(to ATS) to match the output breaker on the generator.

Your feed from the generator can be any size you wish that will handle the load that will be put on it.

It is not required to be larger than the load that the generator can deliver.
