For island receptacle. when is island considered separated, when appl. or sink makes for less than 12" behind unit and what if there is 24" behind unit is it still considered separated or is it considered separated if anything is in island please advise. Thanks

Its hard to follow your question, however this requirement is spelled out and even diagramed in section 210.52(C).

210.52(C)(4) clearly requires a receptacle in each space the meets the dimensions in 210.52(C)(2) when seperated by range tops, refrigerators, or sinks.
The space behind the appliance or sink is not mention for islands or Peninsular Counter Spaces. Just that if each space is of the size mention in 210.52(C)(2) the a receptacle is required in it.

Wayne you made heads or tails out of that one ????Less than 12 behind,and what if there is 24 ins. behind Gaylen a more precise layout would make answering this simple question alot easier.

I understood the question: suppose you have an island with a sink in the center of a long side. Let's say the sink is 24" front to back, meaning the remaining part of the island between the sink and the far side is the depth of the island minus the sink's 24".

Let's say the island is 8' long and 4' deep. The sink takes up half of that 4', leaving 24" of surface connecting the two halves of the island. Is that enough to make the island one area, or does the sink still divide the island, requiring two receptacles?

IMO, that could be argued either way. Better to install two.

Different question: Imagine a 5' peninisula in a kitchen with a 3' sink at the end of the peninsula. The edge of the countertop on the backside also extends off by 16".

Is an outlet required, and where would you put it?

Your question about the separating of a countertop by a sink or range has no bearing on the depth of the countertop.

Look closely at Figure 210.52 ?Determination of Area Behind Sink or Range? and you will see that there are lines that go straight back from each side of the sink or range. These lines denote the beginning of a new counter space no matter how much space that is behind it.

If the space behind the sink or range is greater than 12 inches then a receptacle is required in the area directly behind the sink or range.
