Isolated Ground in Separate Raceway

Hello-
When connecting an IG sub panel or other disconnect (such as a Company Switch in a Theater) from a distribution panel, does the IG conductor need to reside in the same raceway or can it run back separately in an adjacent conduit?

300.5 addresses underground installations, however my question involves aboveground conditions. Do you know if the same requirements would apply?

You didn't ask, but I've been in a lot of theaters and never seen an IG for more than their IT equipment, never on the stage. There might be an EGC in conduit to the disconnect, but it isn't considered IG.

And yes, the EGC, whether isolated or not, needs to follow the circuit conductors
