I'm working on a project, that requires me to make exothermic weld connections within trenches via a mold. Site conditions are pretty bad, but there's only so much dewatering that the GC can do for us. Theres always water in the trench where, we've laid out our cable, and we spend a lot of time cleaning and drying the cable.

We get through about 4-5 welds, after prepping the cable etc by blow torching the mold and the cable to make sure its dry -- but after around 5 welds, the mold material seems to spill out. It could be because the mold isn't 100% level to the ground when we weld or maybe there's too much moisture. Being that each failed weld costs us a lot, I'm not in a place to really experiment.

Has anyone ever faced a similar issue with exothermic welding in trenches ? what helped in the end? Thanks in advance.

Make sure all is correct.
Size of mould.
Size of shot.
Stop disk.
Make sure conductors fit tight in mould and not in bind.
Level mould.
Dry conductors.
Save starter shot for top to ignite.
Etc.
Be very meticulous in your set up.
With all these variables in place , you should be successful.
Good luck.
