VIDEO: Two Injured In Fire

"There was a gentleman they took out. He was burned from his waist up. He had no clothes on -- very black scarred face, chunks of skin missing. Another gentleman walked out. The entire left side of his clothing was burned off -- melted right off," said Whitney Cooper, who works on the 28th floor of the building.

Fire Chief says, "It could'a been a surge; a power surge".

Yeah, looks to me he was put on the spot, he kind of backtracked from that with the 'what where they doing'.

anybody?

anybody?

Based on what little clues were in the video, the injuries sustained, and your own commercial experience, what do you think happened here?

I've never worked at these power levels, so whatever you can tell me will help.

I hate to see anyone get hurt however an NFPA 70E class will inform you of your responsibilities as an owner /employee osha regulations reguarding the approach and ppe required to perform live work. This particular instance sounds to me like an arcflash occured and this whole incident would never have happened if proper procedures were followed. Now this opens up all sorts of lawsuits possible osha fines to the contractor HOPEFULLY these two might survive. How expensive is a flash suit compared to about a grand an hour in a burn unit times two men? A good possibility the gear is damaged permanantly also.

those two burned guys in Boston

those two burned guys in Boston

All of us live in the past 1/8 or 1/10 or a second due to the speed of nerve impulses.
Imagine, you are working one minute, then something happens that you cannot comprehend, and then you spend the next few seconds, minutes and hours trying to figure out what happened.
By the next day they probably had no recollection of anything that happened on that day, before or after the event.

I am somewhat familiar with things that take milliseconds to cause permanent and mutilating injuries ever since my left hand got into a fight with a table saw.
The going rate in this area, in 1994, for doing surgery under a microscope? $1K to $4K per hour.
What's your guess on whether the medical insurance stiffed me?
Now, whatever cuts I can't make with the guard on, I don't make at all.

But, these guys have it, and will continue to have it, much worse.

there needs to be more training on the proper use of PPE equipment. too many injuries like this happen and they are all avoidable with the proper gear and training. safety isnt a joke

I'd be surprised if it was anything besides doing hot work without the proper tools, training, and PPE.

I would be willing to bet you are 100% on the money.

I saw one of the original news casts and the footage was less edited, they actually showed the building engineer that was burned walking out of the building. He was wearing what was left of a business suit. Looked like the synthetic pants had melted to his leg. Lots of fun having that pulled off.

No excuse at all to be in a high voltage vault with just street clothes on.
