So I came in today today to find a metal-halide fixture, still in the box, sitting in front of my truck. That's funny, because I'd been storing it in my truck until I get some time to install it, and I sure didn't take it out.
I'd been keeping the MH light in a big side-box on my pickup where I store all my hand tools. I opened up that box and it was totally empty. Every single thing in it had been stolen. Honest to god, it made me sick looking at that empty box.
I worked fifteen hours yesterday and just completely forgot to check that bay of the truck before I left. Insurance won't cover it because the stupid thing was unlocked. Nevermind that it was sitting in a well-lighted yard surrounded by an eight foot high barbed wire fence.
It's amazing how brazen thieves are. They must've taken eighty or ninety pounds of hand tools. It was either a couple of guys or else one guy making multiple trips.
And what really kills me is: I can see pawning things like wrench and socket sets and punch sets. Those were in great shape, and would really bring in money. But they took a huge tool bag full of miscellaneous screwdrivers, and fuse pullers, and pliers. This stuff is nickle-and-dime (well, sorta) and it was all pretty well used. I can't imagine anyone giving them money for that. Who the heck is gonna buy a plumb-bob at a pawn shop? Or a lockout-tagout kit?
I suppose I should be glad they didn't brake into the cab to steal the test equipment, but jesus. I've been quiet about it all day because it's at least partly my own stupid fault for not locking it up, but man is it eating me. I start doing the math on how much it's gonna cost to replace and it gets into the four-figures pretty quick. I've just been fantasizing about hiding out there in the darkness with a bat and waiting for these yahoos to try again.
It just burns me. This wasn't a TV or someone's Ipod. You need your tools to provide for yourself. Heck, I need those tools to make money to buy replacement tools!
I know there's nothing anyone can do, and I guess I'll trek to the local pawn shops, not that I have much faith in that. Sorry for the rant, but I knew ya'll would sympathize, and it's just hard to deal with.
