Outdoor hot tubs are treated like pools, check out 680.42, that section says to comply with parts I and II of Article 680.

What year code are you on?

Thanks guys i was confused because i have never done a pool before and the spa's that i have done have been either on a wood platform or a protctive rubber matt.

I believe there are bonding matts you can buy or you can make one with #4 COPPER. Making one is a pain in the neck.

I believe the #4 is incorrect from my previous post. #8 is sufficient but I don't have book in hand.

Here is some info from erictech

The requirements for bonding and grounding permanently installed indoor and outdoor swimming pools are provided in Article 680 ?Swimming Pools, Fountains and Similar Installations? of the 2005 Edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC?).

All of the bonded parts in or around swimming pools must be attached to an equipotential bonding grid. This grid must extend 3? beyond the inside surface of the pool under concrete, stone or other paved walking surfaces.

ERICO? offers ERITECH? Prefabricated Mesh as a convenient, efficient and economical solution for equipotential bonding grids. This prefabricated mesh is constructed with #8 AWG solid copper conductor with 12? x 12? spacing. It is available in 3? x 100? rolls, as well as in other convenient sizes.
ERICO also manufacturers ERITECH? ground clamps for use in bonding the mesh to other cable conductors and rebar. You can trust ERITECH to offer a wide variety of items to bond per the new NEC requirements.

Please note that pools made of non-conductive materials (fiberglass composite, vinyl lined polymer or other non-conductive materials) do not require an equipotential grid that covers the full contour of the bottom and sides of the pool. However, an equipotential grid is still required around the perimeter of the pool extending 3? beyond the sides of the pool.
Features

  • Convenient, efficient and economical solution for equipotential bonding grids
  • Constructed with #8 AWG solid copper conductor with 12? x 12? spacing
  • Available in 3? x 100? rolls and other convenient sizes
Applications

ERITECH? Prefabricated Mesh helps ensure all of the bonded parts in or around the swimming pool are attached to an equipotential bonding grid.

When does the 2008 NEC take full effect?

When those people sitting in Trenton decide it's the right time. It used to be when the license renewal deadline ended (March 2009) but I've heard that they may push the date up to sometime this year.
